The One Day Resolution

One Day at a Time

Addiction Recovery tells us to Live One Day at a Time and focus on changing what only what we can. You don’t need to be a recovering person to employ this mantra. Give it a fair shot and it will radically transform you life. Forget the New Year’s Resolution: This is The One Day Resolution.

Have goals, and big ones at that. Write those goals down, think about them, plan for them, then refocus on what’s right in front of you: today. We get lost in the bullshit of thinking we can live tomorrow, next month, or next year while it’s still today, and that’s where anxiety starts to creep in. Forget about last year. It’s done, buried, finished. Let the past rest and resolve to give today hell. If you choose to, this really could be the first day of the rest of your life. Sure, the calendar says it’s New Year’s Day, but it’s just another day. Win today and do not make excuses. This is how folks in addiction recovery live and as one of those people, I can attest to how good this way of living can be. Try it and see.

The Prayer of all Prayers

If you are willing to try something I will guarantee it will change the course of your life. The entire self-help movement can be distilled down to this prayer. Recite it as often as you’d like or as often as it is needed, and only focus on changing what you can, just for today.

God, grant me the serenity; to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Reinhold Niebuhr

On this New Year’s Day pause for a moment. Stop thinking about your yearly resolutions and focus on your resolutions for today. Tomorrow, do the exact same thing. Before you know it, you will be exactly where you should be.

Just move the needle.

See you in the shop, and Happy New Day.

Paul
