Men’s Self Help Isn’t Complicated
Men’s self help doesn’t have to suck. Over my nearly twenty year career as an addictions and mental health professional I’ve counseled and advised thousands of men dealing with some major life issues. The common thread is always this:
“I know my life is in shambles, but I don’t know where to begin. I can’t make a decision!”
Can you relate? Men’s self help doesn’t have to be complicated. You probably don’t need years worth of counseling or psychotherapy. What you must do is decide to change one thing in your life and do that one thing really damn well. Change requires focused action, nothing more. Let’s get down to business.
Do One Thing Really Damn Well
The man in the picture above is Bill Hines, a famous custom car builder. He was known as the last of the leadslingers and built some really cool cars. Bill had shops all around Metro Detroit in the 50’s and 60’s and never tried to be anything but a custom car guy. He did one thing really damn well.
Want some peace of mind? Stop trying to change everything in your life at once. Instead, focus on changing one thing and do it really damn well. Focus all of your attention of changing the thing in your life that will make the most difference. Be an arrow with a target. Be like Bill.
Focused Attention is the Key
Stress and anxiety can often be traced back to analysis paralysis, or decision fatigue, because we have too many choices. Do this, change that, fix this, ignore that. We overextend ourselves, nothing gets finished, nothing changes, we’re constantly tired, feel defeated, and wonder why we are not making any progress. We do too much and none of it very well.
Keep life simple. Stop trying to change too many things at one time and just change one thing, maybe two, and watch yourself progress like never before. Just keep moving the needle.
See you in the shop.
